Monthly personal review template

Boards don't ask "did you feel productive?". They ask what the numbers were, why, and what happens next. A monthly personal review works the same way and takes 30 to 60 minutes.

How to run a board-style monthly review

1. Progress against targets

List every initiative with its target, actual result and percentage achieved. Mark each as on track, slightly behind or off track. Stick to the numbers here; explanations come next.

2. What drove the results

For anything well ahead or behind, write one or two lines on why. Look for causes you can act on: schedule, energy, environment, the target itself.

3. What to adjust

Decide on a small number of actions for next month. Each should be specific and have a clear owner (you) and timing. Change a target only when it's clearly wrong, not because one month was hard.

4. Follow up

Start next month's review by checking whether last month's actions were done.

  1. Summary: two or three sentences on the month overall.
  2. Scorecard: the table below.
  3. Commentary: what drove the main results.
  4. Matters arising: actions from last month and whether they were done.
  5. Decisions and actions: what changes for next month.

Example review

Summary: A solid month for saving and study; running fell behind during a busy fortnight at work.

Commentary: Running slipped when work ran late; evening runs kept getting skipped.

Decisions and actions:

  • Move two runs a week to the morning before work.
  • Keep the running target at 40 km and review again next month.
  • Plan one alcohol-free option before each weekend away.
